Ozone Therapy
"Natural forces within us are the true healers of disease".
~Hippocrates
Our greatest happiness does not depend on the condition of life in which chance has placed us, but is always the result of a good conscience, good health, occupation, and freedom in all just pursuits.
~Thomas Jefferson

Ozone Therapy
Ozone therapy is an alternative medical treatment that introduces ozone or ozonides to the body. According to a 2014 study, Ozone therapy can treat chronic inflammation that may lead to oxidative cell damage. It contains antimicrobial properties because of its reactivity against the cellular walls of several microbes as bacteria, viruses, fungi and yeast. Also, contains anti-inflammatory properties as well as hemodynamic properties helping the blood circulation and increases the effectiveness of the body's antioxidant enzymes, as a result, it may reduce inflammation and the subsequent risk of disease.
Additionally, ozone acts on the nerve endings in the damaged tissue and limits pain intensity. To add to that, it normalizes the antioxidant system, which eases pain.

Mechanism of action:
The mechanism of action of a drug treatment is the interaction between the drug and the patient's cellular or chemical makeup.
Antimicrobial mechanism:
Ozone increases interferon and signaling proteins that are released by the patient's host cells. Interferon is able to recognize microbial populations and abnormal cells. Once it recognizes them it alerts the immune system which in turn releases more white blood cells that will target the recognized pathogens.
Antineoplastic mechanism:
Antineoplastic is how is called the property that allows ozone to act against tumors. Besides the production of interferon, ozone also increases the output of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) which is an important signaling protein from the immune system. The TNF has a complex pathway, but its responsibility is the cell death of the abnormal cells. Interleukin 2 is another cell that increases its production in the present of ozone treatment and its role is to regulate the activity and growth of white blood cells.
Oxygen metabolism:
Among the diverse beneficial effects of ozone is the stimulation of oxygen metabolisms. It increases the rate of glycolysis in red blood cells (which is the breakdown of glucose or sugar to produce energy). During glycolysis, red blood cells are stimulated to make substance called 2,3-disphosphoglycerate that controls the movement of oxygen from red blood cells to body tissues increasing the oxygen levels. It activates the Krebs cycle which is another energy producing mechanism. It stimulates some enzymes that protect the cell wall of the host and induces vasodilation which improve circulation.

Autohemotherapy:
It is a systemic treatment in which ozone is mixed with patient's blood. It combines ozone and medical oxygen with the patient's blood and re-infuses it to the patient. It is a procedure performed in sessions days apart.
Insufflation:
Is performed by blowing ozone gas into a body cavity, most of the time through the rectum or vagina. However, it can also be administered through the ear or nasal cavity

Proposed Uses
Ozone therapy offers the possibility of treating a variety of diseases and can help healing injuries. Most conditions are cause by chronic or abnormal inflammation. Ozone provides anti-inflammatory properties indicated by autoimmune disorders, allergies, and most inflammatory conditions. It aids healing wounds and fighting infections. It can be used for dermatological and dental purposes. Also, ozone possesses antimicrobial properties, so viral, bacterial and fungal diseases can be effectively treated with it. It used for cancer, tumors and a variety of vascular indications. It improves the circulation as well as effects of oxygen and antioxidants.
The therapeutic properties of ozone can positively impact a wide variety of diseases that can repair injuries. Examples of those diseases are:
-
Cancer.
-
Heart disease.
-
Autoimmune disease.
-
Lyme disease.
-
Chronic fatigue syndrome.
-
Alzheimer's
-
Parkinson's disease.
-
Hepatitis.
-
Vascular surgery.
-
Wound Healing.
-
Ear infections.
-
Dental infections.
-
Urologic disease.

Side effects of ozone therapy:
Herxheimer reaction is a side adverse reaction that may be caused by ozone treatment. A patient presenting such reaction may experience excessive fatigue, rash, lymph drainage, and fever/chills.
Within the most common complains that patients present is:
-
Weakness.
-
Slight dizziness.
-
Sleepiness.
None of these last long.
-
Rarely, patients experience an allergic reaction al local topical application of ozone. In such cases they present a minor rash.
Contraindications:
There are some conditions that can preclude using ozone:
-
G-6PD deficiency or favism.
-
Pregnancy.
-
Thrombocytopenia.
-
Serious cardio-vascular instability.
-
Patients being treated with ACE inhibitors which cause blood vessels to enlarge or dilate, and blood pressure is reduced.
-
Any bleeding disorders.
-
Ozone Allergy.
Ozone Therapies most be avoided if:
-
Blood fails to coagulates.
-
If there was a trauma of a disease that involves bleeding organs.
-
Thrombocytopenia .
-
Ozone allergy or intolerance.
